Degesys.Catherine@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Catherine A. Degesys, M.D., pertains to Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology. Dr. Degesys focuses on high-risk skin cancers and reconstructive outcomes following Mohs surgery.

Focus areas

  • Management of high-risk skin cancers. Dr. Degesys has a research interest in determining which features make some skin cancers higher risks than others. These factors include tumor-specific features and patient-specific features such as immunosuppression.

Her research involves a project with her colleagues to determine the impact of skin cancer on the quality of life in patients with large skin cancers and high-risk features.
  • Reconstruction following Mohs micrographic surgery. Dr. Degesys is studying reconstructive techniques in order to obtain optimal functional and cosmetic outcomes following skin cancer surgery.
  • Artificial intelligence in skin cancer therapy. Dr. Degesys has worked on a team to develop algorithms used to suggest optimal treatment strategies for skin cancer based on size, location and histopathology.

Significance to patient care

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. In many cases, it can be treated with surgery alone, with excellent cure rates. However, in some cases, these cancers can become more aggressive, requiring multidisciplinary care.

Dr. Degesys' research predicts which patients are at risk for more serious outcomes and potentially allows for modifications of risk factors.
