Deep.Nicholas@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Nicholas L. Deep, M.D., is an ear and skull base surgeon who specializes in hearing disorders and brain tumors that originate from the cranial nerves or structures adjacent to the temporal bone of the skull. As cochlear implant technology continues to evolve, Dr. Deep studies clinical outcomes of patients receiving such implants.

Dr. Deep has a special interest in expanding access to cochlear implantation for nontraditional candidates, such as those with single-sided hearing impairment and neurofibromatosis type 2. Additionally, he researches the impact of cochlear implantation on reducing incident dementia in older adults.

In collaboration with his neurosurgery colleagues, Dr. Deep is interested in the comprehensive management of patients with vestibular schwannoma. His research focus is on hearing preservation microsurgery for vestibular schwannoma as well as cochlear implant outcomes in patients with treated or untreated vestibular schwannomas.

Focus areas

  • Neurocognitive impact on cochlear implantation in older patients and its impact on dementia
  • Outcomes of cochlear implantation in nontraditional candidates, such as those with single-sided hearing impairment or neurofibromatosis
  • Cochlear implantation under local anesthesia
  • Hearing preservation cochlear implantation
  • Noninvasive cochlear stimulation device development
  • Microsurgical techniques and outcomes in the treatment of vestibular schwannoma

Significance to patient care

Dr. Deep's research goals are to improve the decision-making in complex vestibular schwannoma management and enhance surgical techniques, both of which will help ensure better patient outcomes. He also aims to expand access to cochlear implant technology to a broader range of patients who may benefit from the technology.
