SUMMARY

Research interests of Brian J. Davis, M.D., Ph.D., relate to the radiotherapeutic management of prostate cancer.

Current funded research efforts include an NIH grant to develop a new ultrasound probe for prostate cancer therapy(R33 CA107933-01 Trans-urethral ultrasound for prostate cancer therapy. Principal Investigator, Brian J. Davis, M.D., Ph.D., and Co-Principal Investigator, Richard A. Robb, Ph.D. 10/1/04– 9/30/07 (3 year grant - $1,485,000)). This research and development project is being conducted in conjunction with Siemens Medical Solutions.

Other research efforts funded through the Mayo Prostate Cancer SPORE project include the Clinical Follow-up Core (CA91956-04C4) where Dr. Davis serves as the Principal Manager. This core supports accrual of patients to clinical trials in the SPORE, a large 5-year grant from the NIH devoted to translational research in prostate cancer. Other efforts in this grant include collaboration on in-situ gene therapy of prostate cancer using the sodium iodide symporter (CA91956-04P6) and fusogenic membrane glycoprotein (CA91956-04P5).

Additional ultrasound research conducted by Dr. Davis related to prostate cancer includes evaluation of echogenic prostate brachytherapy seeds and vibro-acoustography. These projects are conducted in collaboration with the Ultrasound Research Laboratory, Biomedical Imaging Resource, and Radiology Research Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic. Histopathologic studies and data analysis of prostatectomy findings as they relate to radiotherapy and brachytherapy are ongoing. Analysis of outcomes from prostate cancer therapy are a primary clinical research interest.
