SUMMARY

Samantha Conley, Ph.D., is a nurse-scientist with a research focus on self-management strategies of symptoms in adults with chronic conditions, particularly in people with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. People with chronic conditions often experience two or more co-occurring symptoms such as pain, depression or fatigue, all of which negatively impact their functioning and quality of life. Dr. Conley also researches how people with inflammatory bowel disease sleep, and how their sleep patterns impact their symptoms.

Focus areas

  • Symptom clusters and factors that contribute to a high symptom burden in people with inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Self-management interventions for people with inflammatory bowel disease to reduce their symptom burden.
  • Sleep, circadian rhythm, and how changes in sleep and circadian rhythms impact symptom burden.

Significance to patient care

People with chronic conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, experience multiple co-occurring symptoms, which may indicate a high symptom burden. Dr. Conley aims to develop and test interventions to improve symptom burden in people with chronic conditions.
