SUMMARY

Linda L. Chlan, Ph.D., R.N., is the first associate dean for nursing research at Mayo Clinic. Additionally, Dr. Chlan maintains her own program of research focused on symptom science. Her program of research encompasses testing symptom management interventions with patients receiving mechanical ventilatory support.

Focus areas

  • Nonpharmacological interventions to reduce mechanical ventilation-induced anxiety in critically ill patients
  • Self-management of sedative therapy by patients receiving ventilatory support
  • Post-ICU outcomes and quality of life

Significance to patient care

Dr. Chlan's patient-centered program of research aims to reduce symptom burden and distress in patients with critical illnesses receiving mechanical ventilatory support. In addition, careful examination of ICU care practices is warranted to reduce ICU-acquired adverse sequelae in order to promote post-ICU quality of life in survivors of critical illness and injury.

Dr. Chlan aims to set the strategic vision for nursing research across Mayo Clinic. Increased national prominence and recognition for the discoveries within Mayo Clinic's Division of Nursing Research programs will lead to an enhanced experience for patients at Mayo Clinic and patients everywhere.
