Caraballo.Pedro@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research interest of Pedro J. Caraballo, M.D., relates to the evaluation of the clinical impact of computer-based CDS integrated in the workflow, and the secondary use of electronic clinical data to develop prediction models of complex medical conditions.

Focus areas

  • As the medical director of the Clinical Decision Support Program at Mayo Clinic, and in coordination with the Pharmacogenomics Task Force, Dr. Caraballo has led the implementation of 19 drug-gene interaction clinical decision support rules in two commercially available electronic medical records.
  • Dr. Caraballo's efforts include the development of a systematic model that comprises all aspects of pharmacogenomics implementation at the point of care: governance, review of the clinical evidence, clinical approval, migration of lab results to the electronic health record, education and development, testing and implementation of decision rules, and synchronous and asynchronous interventions. The program is also gathering transactional data from the different electronic health records to evaluate the impact of pharmacogenomic education and clinical decision support interventions.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Caraballo's research in the implementation and evaluation of informatics systems is designed to improve clinical practice and increase positive outcomes for patients.
