Brumbaugh.Jane@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Jane E. Brumbaugh, M.D., is a neonatologist engaged in clinical research focused on the cognitive, behavioral and developmental outcomes of children at risk of altered developmental trajectories. Dr. Brumbaugh is interested in the relationship between perinatal morbidities, such as prematurity, and the developing brain.

Focus areas

  • Social determinants of health and prematurity. Children born extremely preterm are more likely to be affected by adverse social determinants of health than are children born full term. Dr. Brumbaugh and her collaborators aim to characterize the effects of adverse social determinants of health in children born extremely preterm.
  • Outcomes following periviable birth. Children born at 22 to 23 weeks of gestation are resuscitated with increasing frequency. Dr. Brumbaugh and her collaborators aim to understand the outcomes for these children to better inform periviable counseling and follow-up after hospital discharge.
  • Chronic lung disease of infancy and the developing brain. Chronic lung disease of infancy, also known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, results from disrupted lung development due to preterm birth. Dr. Brumbaugh and her collaborators aim to distinguish how outcomes of children affected by chronic lung disease differ from outcomes of other children born preterm.

Significance to patient care

About 10% of births in the United States occur before 37 weeks of gestation. These births are labeled preterm or premature. After preterm birth, rapid brain growth occurs in an altered environment compared with the in utero environment. A subset of children born preterm experience developmental differences that may affect classroom achievement, peer interactions and independence. Understanding these differences informs perinatal counseling, support services and, ultimately, neuroprotective interventions.
