Brewer.Jerry@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research interests and involvement of Jerry D. Brewer, M.D., M.S., include Mohs micrographic surgery, skin cancer in immunosuppressed people, hyperhidrosis, lymphoma-associated skin cancer, melanoma epidemiology, Merkel cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) and other high-risk skin cancers. Dr. Brewer has developed an expertise in systematic reviews and meta-analyses with a focus on treatment and process optimization in the setting of cutaneous oncology.

Focus areas

  • Melanoma epidemiology. Dr. Brewer has led multiple population-based studies looking at the rising incidence of melanoma over the past 40 years according to age and sex. He also has participated in survey-based studies looking at risk factors associated with the rise in melanoma incidence.
  • Skin cancer in the setting of immunosuppression. Dr. Brewer has developed and led multiple studies looking at the incidence and outcomes of many different forms of skin cancer. These cancers include malignant melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma in the setting of immunosuppression, particularly in people with lymphoma and organ transplants.
  • Systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Dr. Brewer has led multiple systematic review teams with an overarching emphasis on improving outcomes in the setting of dermatological surgery and cutaneous oncology.

Significance to patient care

Optimizing outcomes such as recurrence rates and metastatic disease can have a huge impact on people's quality of life and mortality. Dr. Brewer has helped lead an initiative that optimizes the surgical approach to challenging skin cancers such as EMPD. A collaborative approach is used with other disciplines in treating EMPD, which decreases recurrence rates and improves quality of life. Dr. Brewer researches optimal management for certain skin cancers such as melanoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and others. This gives people the highest chance of a cure and improved quality of life.
