Breitkopf.Daniel@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Daniel M. Breitkopf, M.D., focuses on novel methods for the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding. Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the most common problems for which women seek gynecologic care.

Additionally, Dr. Breitkopf studies new methods for incisionless tubal ligation. He also is working on improving the utility of diagnostic ultrasound in gynecology.

Focus areas

  • Hysteroscopic tubal ligation, including novel methods for performing the procedure and confirming efficacy
  • Use of diagnostic ultrasound in women with adenomyosis, abnormal uterine bleeding and postmenopausal bleeding
  • Role of office hysteroscopy in obtaining endometrial biopsies
  • Minimally invasive methods for the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding

Significance to patient care

New methods of diagnosing abnormal uterine bleeding will lead to more accurate treatment. Additionally, moving toward less-invasive techniques for diagnosis should reduce pain associated with diagnostic procedures.

Alternative methods for incisionless tubal ligation may reduce the need for "back-up" contraception and lead to higher efficacy.
