Borlaug.Barry@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research interests of Barry A. Borlaug, M.D., focus on the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of heart failure. Dr. Borlaug is particularly interested in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction; this disease constitutes about half the heart failure population but has no proven treatment.

Dr. Borlaug is currently pursuing a number of clinical studies examining which abnormalities contribute to functional limitation and symptoms of heart failure, as well as treatment studies seeking to identify novel strategies, devices and treatments for patients with heart failure.

Focus areas

  • The pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
  • Mechanisms, characterization, and treatment of pulmonary hypertension
  • Hemodynamics of heart failure, pericardial disease and valvular heart disease
  • Assessment of ventricular and vascular function
  • Cardiovascular aging and effects of obesity on cardiovascular function

Significance to patient care

Dr. Borlaug's research is focused on the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Mechanistic research is geared toward understanding why patients develop symptoms and disability that drives poor outcomes and impaired quality of life. These observations then serve as the basis to design and perform clinical trials of new therapies targeting these mechanisms. Dr. Borlaug's current research is focused on both axes with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes for people with heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
