Binder.Moritz@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Moritz Binder, M.D., M.P.H., is focused on understanding the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms governing gene expression in hematologic malignancies. His translational research in multiple myeloma and chronic myeloid neoplasms is concerned with the effects of chromatin remodeling on gene expression in cancer cells.

Using computational biology methods, Dr. Binder dissects the molecular underpinnings of high-risk gene expression patterns determining cancer cell proliferation, dissemination and therapeutic resistance. His work aims to discover novel epigenetic therapeutic targets that can inform individualized treatment strategies in patients with hematologic malignancies.

Focus areas

  • Multiple myeloma. Dr. Binder conducts translational research on treatment-resistant multiple myeloma. In collaboration with Shaji Kumar, M.D., he studies the gene expression patterns and chromatin structure of multiple myeloma resistant to immunomodulatory drugs, proteasome inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies.
  • Chronic myeloid neoplasms. Dr. Binder studies the epigenetic determinants of gene expression in chronic myeloid neoplasms associated with mutations in the chromatin-remodeling proteins such as ASXL1. In collaboration with Mrinal S. Patnaik, M.B.B.S., he investigates the suitability of cis-regulatory elements to serve as therapeutic targets in high-risk myeloid neoplasms.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Binder's research goal is to further the understanding of molecular disease mechanisms, to identify novel therapeutic targets for clinical trials, and to develop individualized treatment strategies for patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies.
