SUMMARY

Philippe R. Bauer, M.D., Ph.D., has research interests in both critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine.

Focus areas

  • Critical care medicine. Dr. Bauer is interested in studying new ways to diagnose sepsis. In close collaboration with the immunology laboratory of Roshini S. Abraham, Ph.D., he is focused on determining new biomarkers of sepsis. Dr. Bauer's goal is to optimize the care of patients with infection and shock.
  • Pulmonary medicine. Dr. Bauer is interested in the epidemiology of interstitial lung disease associated with systemic sclerosis. His focus is improving knowledge about the influence of pulmonary complications on outcomes in systemic sclerosis.

Significance to patient care

From a critical care perspective, Dr. Bauer's research aims to improve the care of patients with sepsis through early detection and reduced antibiotic use, leading to better outcomes.

From a pulmonary perspective, his research aims to improve knowledge about the natural history of systemic sclerosis in order to establish which patients would benefit from early intervention.
