SUMMARY

Bashar A. Aqel, M.D., is a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist with a focus in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Dr. Aqel's research is focused on understanding the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease and identifying new treatment options.

Focus areas

  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Dr. Aqel studies the pathogenesis of NAFLD and the impact of gut bacteria (microbiome) on the progression of this disease. He has also participated in multiple studies to help identify future treatment for this highly prevalent disease.
  • Viral hepatitis. Dr. Aqel studies the efficacy and safety of new hepatitis C treatment in patients awaiting liver transplant and those with recurrent infection post-transplant. This work has been published in the journal Hepatology.
  • Liver transplant. Dr. Aqel works with an experienced transplant team to improve the care of patients awaiting liver transplant and explore different venues that will improve patients' access to liver transplant.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Aqel hopes to identify new targets for treatment and new treatment options for patients with NAFLD. He also hopes to improve patients' access to liver transplant.
