SUMMARY

The recent research focus of Kai-Nan An, Ph.D., is on soft tissue mechanics, including tissue regeneration and noninvasive assessment using medical imaging such as magnetic resonance elastography and ultrasound. Dr. An's ongoing studies are targeted on mechanical and biochemical factors influencing soft tissue integrity, performance and remodeling.

Focus areas

  • Biomechanics of upper extremities. Exploring the etiologies and treatment modality of disorders related to the joint, bone and soft tissue
  • Sports and rehabilitation medicine. Developing methods for image-based, noninvasive diagnosis and conservative treatment associated with soft tissue injury
  • Orthopedic surgery. Developing medical devices and instruments used for treating joint arthritis and skeletal fracture

Significance to patient care

Dr. An and colleagues work with clinicians to find solutions to problems that will meet patient needs in the future, thereby applying tested engineering concepts to patient care. Recent developments of the image-based assessment of the anatomic morphology and tissue material properties have great potential for diagnosis and outcome evaluation.
