AlKali.Aref@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Aref Al-Kali, M.D., is an expert in myeloid neoplasms and develops new therapies for myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia. He researches molecular signatures of myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia to understand these conditions and improve treatments.

Focus areas

  • Drug development. Dr. Al-Kali is a national expert in myeloid neoplasms. He has participated in and run multiple trials with new drugs in people who have myeloid neoplasms. Some of these new drugs for myeloid neoplasms have been approved for treatment. Dr. Al-Kali focuses on treatments for relapsed and refractory myelodysplastic syndromes.
  • Molecular research on mutations in myeloid neoplasms. Dr. Al-Kali has published numerous papers on improving the understanding about the mutations some individuals have with myeloid neoplasms. He improves the classification and treatment outcomes for people with myeloid neoplasm mutations.
  • Premyeloid research. Dr. Al-Kali has written several papers on treatment of a new entity called clonal cytopenia of unknown significance. He also led an international multicenter study focused on understanding the long-term effects of this entity.

Significance to patient care

Trials pave the way for better medicine with less toxicity. Dr. Al-Kali aids in the approval of oral drugs that help in the care of myelodysplastic syndromes. He also was the first to raise the possibility of watch and wait in certain molecular signatures or markers. Dr. Al-Kali's published research that compares real-world experience with clinical trials data concerning myeloid neoplasms provides relevant information that helps further the understanding of myelodysplastic syndromes.
