Edward S. Ahn, M.D., conducts clinical research with the pediatric neurosurgery research group at Mayo Clinic. This group aims to investigate surgical outcomes of children with neurosurgical disorders. The studied disorders include congenital malformations, vascular disorders, hydrocephalus, fetal anomalies and brain tumors.

Focus areas

• Craniosynostosis. Dr. Ahn performs minimally invasive surgery to correct head shape deformities from craniosynostosis. He explores surgical innovations to improve the safety of these operations for young infants. He also investigates new methods that use image-based craniometrics to diagnose craniosynostosis in early infancy.
• Fetal surgery. In conjunction with Mayo Clinic's Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Dr. Ahn performs prenatal surgery for myelomeningocele. Innovations in technique and broader applications are being explored.
• Pediatric neurovascular disorders. Dr. Ahn is interested in outcomes and natural history analysis of arteriovenous malformations and moyamoya disease.
• Hydrocephalus. Dr. Ahn investigates early interventions for intraventricular hemorrhage of prematurity and surgical outcomes.
• Chiari malformation and syringomyelia.
