Research: It's All About Patients

Mayo's mission is about the patient, the patient comes first. So the mission and research here, is to advance how we can best help the patient, how to make sure the patient comes first in care. So in many ways, it's a cycle. It can start with as simple as an idea, worked on in a laboratory, brought to the patient bedside, and if everything goes right, and let's say it's helpful or beneficial, then brought on as a standard approach. And I think that is one of the unique characteristics of Mayo's approach to research, that patient-centeredness. That really helps to put it in its own spotlight.

Neurology research is integral to patient care at Mayo Clinic. Neurologists use research findings to improve diagnosis and therapies for people with brain and nervous system disorders. Mayo Clinic physician-scientists collaborate with researchers worldwide, contributing to advances in medicine that improve neurological care for people everywhere.

Part of Mayo Clinic's commitment to its patients involves conducting medical research that can help people live longer, healthier lives. Clinical trials are research studies that involve volunteer participants. These human studies help physician-scientists better understand, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases and conditions.

Mayo Clinic's clinical trials in neurology include new treatments for onset of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, familial trends in neurological diseases, studies to improve treatments for epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and many more.

Mayo Clinic also has thousands of other active clinical trials and research studies, and it coordinates national clinical trials with other medical institutions.

Investigators are involved in numerous clinical trials focusing on translational diagnostic and therapeutic research programs at Mayo Clinic's three campuses, providing broad geographic reach and diverse patient populations.
