The purpose of this study is to assess and compare the utility of ultrasonographic shear wave elastography (SWE) method as compared to “ABCDE” thickening ratio and fraction method in assessing diaphragm function.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the opioid dose-response on diaphragm muscle shear wave speed across breathing behaviors and respiratory function parameters in patients with no pre-existing respiratory conditions. We will directly evaluate if opioids decrease diaphragm muscle shear wave speed during higher force behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to to determine the impact of anesthesia (liposomal bupivacaine) on diaphragm muscle forces using a non-invasive ultrasonographic shear wave elastography (SWE) method.  

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of opioid administration on diaphragm muscle forces during resting breathing and during higher force maneuvers by using a non-invasive shear wave elastography (SWE) method.

The prevalence of chronic pain following total knee replacement has been under studied.  In recent years, the perioperative use of multimodal analgesic strategies including regional anesthetic techniques has substantially improved early postoperative pain management. However, it is not clear that these improvements in perioperative care have reduced the frequency of chronic pain post-total knee replacement.  This study will conduct a cross sectional study to determine the prevalence of chronic knee pain following total knee replacement up to 5 years postoperatively.  This study will also identify risk factors, such as smoking, depression, and pain problems elsewhere as predictors of chronic knee pain after knee replacement.
