Using a Validated Bloating Questionnaire: The Relationship Between Breath Testing Results and Pre-test Symptom Severity

About this study

We will be testing the relationship between a recently validated bloating questionnaire and breath test results to learn if the severity of self-reported bloating on the Mayo Bloating Questionnaire will correlate with the degree of positivity on fructose, lactose, and lactulose breath tests.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult patients, defined as 18 years and older.
  • Patients being evaluated at Mayo Clinic for symptoms of abdominal bloating and/or distension.
  • Patients who are already scheduled for breath testing at Mayo Clinic (lactose, fructose, and lactulose) for clinical purposes.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Previous intervention that could significantly alter gastrointestinal physiology and symptoms of bloating and distension, defined as:
    • Initiation of new medications or diets;
    • Recent (< 30 days) administration of antibiotics or colonoscopy prep;
    • Prolonged fasting or surgery to the stomach or small intestine.
