Epidemiology of Kidney Stones and Chronic Kidney Disease

Overview

About this study

By comparing people who have kidney stones to people who do not have kidney stones, we hope to learn what causes kidney stones to form and determine if kidney stones lead to loss of kidney function or kidney disease.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Patient Population:

Number (total, each subgroup): 1300, 800 incident stone formers, 500 controls Gender: Male Female Ages: 18 to 79

Inclusion Criteria:

Stone formers:

Must have had their first symptomatic (pain or hematuria) kidney stone in 2009 or later (Rochester) or 2011 or later (Jacksonville)..

Controls:

No prior history of symptomatic kidney stones

Exclusion Criteria:

Dementia,
severe disability,
end-stage renal disease,
Stone formers with only asymptomatic stones or only bladder stones will be excluded.
