A Study of a Virtual Reality Module in Adolescents to Retrain their Brain to Make Healthier Choices

About this study

The purpose of this study is to:

  1. To test the feasibility of a virtual reality module (VRM) in adolescents (ages 12-18 years) with obesity
  2. To examine the effect of a weight management intervention utilizing the virtual reality module (VRM) on behavior related to nutrition and physical activity as well as body image in adolescents with obesity
  3. To examine the effect of a weight management intervention utilizing the virtual reality module (VRM) on body weight, BMI and waist circumference outcomes in adolescents with obesity
  4. Data from this pilot study will be used as the basis for future funding applications

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  1. Age 12-18 years old
  2. BMI at or above the 95th percentile for age and gender based on 2000 CDC Growth Charts
  3. Ability to attend in person clinical appointments related to the research study with an adult caregiver

Exclusion Criteria: 

  1. Participant age lies outside the specified range
  2. BMI criteria not met
  3. Child as specific emotional or physical impairment that would preclude meaningful engagement with the VRM despite ADA-directed assistive compliance
  4. Patients receiving pharmacotherapy for weight loss
  5. Patients actively engaged in a weight loss program
