Analysis of Distal Upper Extremity Kinematics and EMG Activity in Elite Tennis Players

About this study

The purpose of this study is to collect kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) data from ten high-level tennis athletes for the creation of a normative database.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ranked, competitive, elite tennis players age 10-26 years inclusive.

  • No current musculoskeletal upper extremity complaints for which the subject is being treated that would preclude their participation.

  • Pain-free motion (ROM) of the bilateral upper and lower limbs.

  • Active participation in USTA sanctioned tennis events or involvement in advanced level tennis training.

  • Subject and guardian (for subjects age <18) will be verbally informed of the testing procedure by one of the co-investigators, and written consent will be obtained.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Ongoing upper limb musculoskeletal injuries.

  • Known neurological, visual, or vestibular disease affecting balance or coordination.

  • Unwilling to comply with all aspects of the study protocol.

  • No individual will be excluded based on race or ethnic background.
