A Study to Better Understand the Basic Mechanisms Behind Small Vessel Disease (SVD) Development in Older Adults

About this study

The aim of this study is to deeply phenotype adult patients and healthy volunteers with varying degrees of sporadic CNS small vessel disease (deep white matter Fazekas scores of 0 to 3). This would be a stage 1 phenotyping exercise of CNS small vessel disease.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age >50 years
  • Ability to provide informed consent
  • English as native language
  • Ambulatory without assist device

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Contraindication to undergoing brain MRI per standard clinical practice guidelines
  • Dementia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
  • Known HIV infection
  • Epilepsy
  • History of carotid endarterectomy or carotid stenting
  • Actively treated endocarditis
  • Mechanical mitral or aortic valve replacement
  • Enrollment in a randomized trial or registry of an experimental drug or device
  • Evidence on brain MRI of tumor, abscess, arteriovenous malformation, symptomatic infarct >2 cm, symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage >2 cm
