A Study to Examine the Changes in the Gut Microbiome of Patients Before and After Liver Transplantation

About this study

The purpose of this study is to examine the changes in the gut microbiome of patients before and after liver transplantation, including the donor organ microbiome changes to understand how these changes are related to organ rejection, recurrent disease or infection post transplant.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with cirrhotic end-staged liver disease and a MELD >28, or awaiting planned living donor donation at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN. 
  • All liver transplant recipients will be included, including recipients of multi-organ transplants. 
  • Patients who will simultaneously undergo combined liver transplant with sleeve gastrectomy will also be included. 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients without cirrhotic stage disease prior to transplant will be excluded.
