Behavioral Assessment of Visual Motion Sensitivity in Individuals with Chronic Dizziness

About this study

The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between clinical tests describing vestibular function, and behavioral tests measuring responses to dynamic visual environments.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Male Adults (18-60)
  • Female Adults (18-60)
  • Patients evaluated in the vestibular laboratory at Mayo Clinic Rochester (patient group only)
  • Patients reporting symptoms including dizziness, imbalance, and vertigo for at least 3 months prior to clinical vestibular evaluation (patient group only)

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Uncorrected visual impairment or other condition which precludes presentation of visual scenes through the head-mounted display
  • Inability to use a computer mouse or touch screen to provide responses to the testing
  • Cervical, neck or spinal abnormalities that might preclude subjects from standing upright for at least 5-10 minutes
  • Neurological deficit/ disorders
  • Developmental delays including cognitive delay; impaired cognitive function, senility
  • Evidence of report of substance dependence
