A Study of Sex-Specific Repair Changes in the Brain Following a Concussion

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is evaluate changes in male and female athletes’ brains following concussion injury and recovery, and to see whether female athletes demonstrate a different pattern of recovery compared to male athletes.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

Healthy controls
- Age 16-55
- Males or females
Patients with concussion
- Age 16-55
- Males or females
- Classification of concussion using the Ohio State University TBI identification method

Exclusion Criteria

Healthy controls
- History of neurological disorder
- Classification of a concussion using the Ohio State University TBI identification method
- History of migraine or other headache disorder
  - Tension-type headache on 3 or fewer days per month is allowed
- Gross anatomical abnormalities on T1-weighted imaging identified during routine visual inspection
- Contra-indications to MR imaging
  - e.g Severe claustrophobia
  - e.g Metal in the body
- Pregnancy
Patients with concussion
- History of neurological disorder as seen clinically on MRI
- Gross anatomical abnormalities on T1-weigthed imaging identified during routine visual inspection
- Contra-indications to MR imaging
  - e.g. Severe claustrophobia
  - e.g. Metal in the body
- Pregnancy
