A Study of the Effectiveness of Daily Vitamin D3 Supplementation in Normal Weight Adolescents

About this study

The purpose of this study is to measure the blood level of vitamin D in normal weight adolescents following a 12-week supplementation with Vitamin D3 2000 IU/day.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Age 12 to 18 years
  • BMI between the 5th and the 85th percentile for age and gender

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Has 25 (OH)- D level >80 ng/mL
  • Serum calcium >10.8 mg/dL
  • Serum phosphorus > 5.5 mg/dl
  • Pregnant or nursing
  • Current cancer
  • On multivitamin supplementation
  • Dietary calcium intake exceeding 1500 mg/day
  • Hepatic or renal disorders
  • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Receives insulin, metformin, or oral hypoglycemic medications
  • Malabsorption disorder (Celiac disease, Cystic fibrosis, Inflammatory bowel disease)
