Reducing Smoke Exposure in Children Facing Surgery

About this study

The purpose of this study is to see whether advice by clinicians to cigarette smokers who are parents of children undergoing elective surgery can reduce the exposure of these children to secondhand smoke in the time around surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

Parents and guardians of children < 18 years old who are scheduled for procedures requiring general anesthesia at Mayo Clinic Rochester (surgery or a diagnostic test such as endoscopy or MRI). For each child scheduled for a procedure, one parent or guardian will be eligible.
Current smoking by parent or guardian defined as > 100 cigarettes lifetime consumption and self-reports of smoking either every day or some days.
