About this study

The overall aim of this project is to study the interaction between white blood cells (inflammation) and disc degeneration.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

Patients undergoing elective spine surgery for:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Adults with scoliosis

Exclusion Criteria:

Patients who have previously received immune-suppressive therapies not including NSAIDs and acetaminophen.
Vulnerable patient populations (e.g., pregnant women, children, adults lacking capacity to consent, prisoners, non-native English speakers.
Recent infection (<1 month), including the common cold
History of cancer
Autoimmune diseases
