Diaphragm Ultrasound in Normal and Diseased Subjects

About this study

The purpose of this study is to compare diaphragm excursion (measured with B mode ultrasound) in a small group of healthy subjects with the published values in the curernt literature and to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of M mode ultrasound, in isolation, and when combined with B mode ultrasound of the diaphragm, in diagnosing neuromuscular disease of the diaphragm.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Incluison Criteria:

  • Healthy males and females of any age
  • Patients referred to the EMG lab with shortness of breath or for phrenic nerve conduction studies, diaphragm needle EMG or diaphragm ultrasound.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • For healthy subjects:
    • history of dyspnea at rest or on exertion
    • history of pulmonary disease
    • history of neuromuscular disease
    • history of regular smoking
