About this study

Thte purpose of this study is to determine the impact of acute interval-style exercise training, with or without essential amino acid ingestion, on markers of muscle turnover and mitochondrial biogenesis. The study also aims to determine the impact of acute interval-style exercise training, with or without essential amino acid ingestion, on skeletal muscle satellite cell and myonuclei content.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

Age 60+ years of age
Able to communicate meaningfully with the investigator and must be legally competent to provide written informed consent.
Diagnosed with HFpEF as per established echocardiographic criteria (New York Heart Association Class II-III)
Patients that are taking anticoagulants will need to have an INR < 3

Exclusion Criteria:

Unstable angina, myocardial infarction in the past 4 weeks
Uncompensated heart failure
New York Heart Associationclass IV symptoms, complex ventricular arrhythmias, symptomatic severe aortic stenosis, acute pulmonary embolus, acute myocarditis, untreated high-risk proliferative retinopathy, recent retinal hemorrhage, uncontrolled hypertension, baseline blood screening abnormalities
Medication non-compliance
Medical / orthopedic conditions precluding exercise
Exercise training (>2 weekly sessions of moderate to high intensity aerobic or resistance exercise)
