Using Ultrasound to Improve the Palpation Skills of Physicians in Training

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine if ultrasound can improve the ability of physicians in training (residents) to palpate the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) in the bicipital groove.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:  

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residents between the ages of 18 and 65.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Subject exclusion criteria 
    •  Peripheral neuropathy
    • Peripheral vascular disease
    • Peripheral inflammatory condition
    • Active infection
    • Other condition that preclude the ability to use the hand for palpation
  • Model Exclusion criteria 
    • Individuals with current shoulder pain
    • Prior shoulder surgeries
    • Anatomic deformities or anomalies found during a pre-participation diagnostic ultrasound of the bicipital groove
