A Study to Collect and Compare Biological Specimens from Patients Receiving Iodine Contrast, to Find Markers Associated with Allergic Response

About this study

The purpose of this study is to collect blood and urine specimens from patients receiving iodine contrast for a CT scan, and compare the biological markers in those from patients who have an allergic reaction versus the ones from patients who do not have an allergic reaction.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Adult patients >18 yo
  • Scheduled to undergo any elective contrast-enhanced CT imaging at Mayo 
  • Four groups of patients will be identified
    • Contrast-naïve patients with no record of receiving iodinated contrast material
    • Patients previously exposed to contrast material with no prior evidence of allergic or pseudoallergic reaction
    • Patients previously exposed to contrast material with evidence of allergic or pseudoallergic reaction following this past exposure
    • Patients with evidence of allergic or pseudoallergic reaction following their current CT exam

Exclusion Criteria

  • Is scheduled to receive additional iodinated contrast material from a separate contrast-enhanced exam or procedure in the 7 days prior to the CT scan in question
  • Is taking antihistamine or steroids at the time of CT scan
  • Is unable to provide blood and urine samples
  • Is pregnant at the time of CT scan
  • Is unable to provide consent
  • Does not receive contrast during CT exam
