A Study Assessing the Impact of a Whole Food Plant-Based Diet for Diabetic Patients Who are Undergoing a Total Joint Replacement

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a whole food plant-based diet on blood sugar control in diabetic patients versus a control group on the American Diabetics Association diet before having a total hip, knee, or shoulder replacement surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria 

  • Adult diabetic patients
  • Age 18-75 yrs
  • Scheduled for elective Total Hip Arthroplasty,Total Knee Arthroplasty, or Total Shoulder Arthroplasty 

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patient refusal
  • Financial or dietary restrictions that would preclude consuming a Whole Food Plant-Based diet
  • Unresolved alcohol or drug abuse or dependency
  • Pregnancy
  • History of severe mental illness
  • Current use of warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Prior history of small bowel obstruction or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Any unstable medical condition
  • Age greater than 75 yrs
  • Inability to maintain a stable diabetic regimen during the study period due to non-compliance or severity of diabetes
