A Study of the Effects of Ghrelin on Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Food Intake After Bariatric Surgery

About this study

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Ghrelin on the regulation of food intake and sensation of fullness after bariatric surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Receives routine care in the Nutrition Clinic at the Mayo Clinic
  • Has been at least six months after undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) 
  • May also be recruited by advertisement if has undergone SG/RYGB in another medical facility 
  • Aged 20 - 70 years old
  • Will recruit equal number of age, weight and gender-matched controls
  • Will attend the Mayo Clinic Clinical Research Unit (CRU) for a screening visit
  • Without active systemic illness

Exclusion Criteria

  • < 20 years of age since this procedure is rarely offered to individuals in this age group
  • > 70 years of age to minimize the potential confounding effects of age on glucose tolerance
