A Study Associating Self Injuring Behavior and Flawed Sensory Mechanisms

About this study

The purpose of this study is to discover and to understand why some children with intellectual and developmental delays injure themselves. The project is made to try to get at both the behavior and the biology of things related to stress and pain or the senses that some of these children may experience.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • A patient of Dr. Tervo’s having a diagnosis specific to  intellectual/developmental disability/delay
    • Based on DSM IV criteria and standard intellectual and adaptive behavioral test results as documented through existing chart review performed under the guidance of Dr. Tervo
  • Between the ages of 2-12 years
  • Sedated MRI is ordered

Exclusion Criteria

  • Serious accompanying acute health impairments that are considered to be painful as determined by subjects’ physician record review and/or examination if necessary, e.g.,
    • Reflux 
    • Otitis 
  • Specific syndromes associated with self injurious behavior
