A Study of 7T MRI to Find Very Small Lesions in Patients with Hard to Control Partial Epilepsy

About this study

This study will use powerful 7T MRI scanning to find very small brain lesions that cause partial epileptic seizures.These small lesions can be missed by current MRI scanners. When a  neurosurgeon can find and remove the small area where the seizure starts, it is often possible to cure the epilepsy.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Equal numbers epilepsy patients (N = 40) and healthy volunteers (N = 40, age and gender matched to the epilepsy patient group)
  • non-claustrophobic
  • non-pregnant
  • do not have cardiac pacemakers or other contraindications to MRI
  • Epilepsy patients will be selected from patients seen for clinical care by the P.I. and colleagues at the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic epilepsy centers, based in part on definitive epilepsy diagnosis using
    • ictal video-EEG recordings
    • 3T brain MRI
    • other clinical data
  • Patients who are planning to undergo intracerebral electrode implantation for ictal localization in epilepsy surgery will be included in the partial epilepsy group, if they volunteer for 7T MRI before depth electrode implantation
  • epilepsy patients will have brain 3T MRI performed for clinical indications prior to study entry, and this data will be transferred to the study database

 Exclusion Criteria 

  • generalized tonic-clonic seizures more often than once per month
  • other characteristics that may decrease the safety, tolerability or interpretability of the MRI acquisition and analysis.
