A Study to Learn the Effect of Changes in Oxygen Levels on Changes in Blood Sugar

About this study

The purpose of this study is to see how changes in the amount of oxygen breathed can affect how the body responds to changes in blood sugar.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. Inclusion Criteria:

healthy adult men and women
- We will attempt to enroll an equal number of males and females
18-35 years of age
BMI <30 kg/m2
non-pregnant
non-smokers
subjects must consume at least 200 grams of carbohydrates per day and their customary diets meet ADA guidelines for protein, fat, and carbohydrates during the study
- A brief dietary history will be taken at the time of screening

Exclusion Criteria

hepatic disease
renal disease
hematological disease
peripheral vascular disease
stroke
diabetes
hypertension
hyperglycemia
dyslipidemia
sleep apnea
neurological disorders
bleeding/clotting disorders
debilitating chronic disease
any symptom of undiagnosed illness
history of alcoholism, or substance abuse
Medications that may affect glucose handling
- corticosteroids
- tricyclic-antidepressants
- benzodiazepines
- opiates
- barbiturates
- anticoagulants
Individuals who perform aerobic exercise for more than 40 min 3-4 times per week will be excluded because intensive exercise training may change outcome variables
Women must have a negative pregnancy test within 48 hours of the study
