Pathogenesis of Increased Fracture Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of fractures despite normal or even increased bone mass.

In this project, our research team is using advanced imaging tools (high-resolution peripheral quantitative computerized tomography) and a novel approach to assess bone material properties in vivo in people.

The purpose of this project on the pathogenesis of increased fracture risk is to:

  • Test whether these tools can better identify people with type 2 diabetes who are at risk of osteoporotic fractures
  • Better understand the determinants of the increase in skeletal fragility in these patients
