About Dr. Gores
Gregory J. Gores, M.D., is the executive dean for research at Mayo Clinic and is responsible for leading and managing all of Mayo Clinic's research activities. He also holds the academic rank of professor of medicine and physiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship as the Reuben R. Eisenberg Professor in gastroenterology and hepatology.
A native of North Dakota, Dr. Gores received his undergraduate (Phi Beta Kappa) and M.D. (Alpha Omega Alpha) degrees from the University of North Dakota. He completed a fellowship in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine. During his gastroenterology fellowship, he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellow in the laboratory of Nicholas F. LaRusso, M.D. Before assuming a faculty position at Mayo in 1988, he was a Mayo Foundation Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the laboratory of John J. Lemasters, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Gores is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is past president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Cancer Association. He has also served on committees for the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society of Transplantation, and he has chaired the Hepatobiliary Pathobiology NIH Study Section.
Dr. Gores is currently editor-in-chief for Hepatology and has served as editor-in-chief for Seminars in Liver Diseases and as associate editor for Hepatology and Gastroenterology, the leading journals in these fields. He has also been guest editor for Current Opinion in Gastroenterology. He is the principal investigator of two NIH grants. He has published over 500 articles, editorials and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals such as American Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Oncogene. Dr. Gores is the recipient of the Research Career Achievement Award at Mayo Clinic and the Distinguished Mayo Investigator Award, in addition to being listed for several years as a Best Doctor in America.
Well respected as a mentor, Dr. Gores has mentored over 70 postdoctoral research and clinical fellows and presented at many national and international academic institutions. His clinical and research contributions include advances in the understanding of hepatobiliary malignancies, liver transplantation and mechanisms of liver cell injury.
