Education and Training

Postdoc trainees in Dr. Jurk's Biology of Aging and Age-Related Diseases Lab at Mayo Clinic

Dr. Jurk's Biology of Aging and Age-Related Diseases Laboratory is committed to creating valuable learning opportunities for students and postdoc trainees. We have already successfully trained undergrad students, master students, Ph.D. students and postdoc fellows.

Students

The lab is considering applications from students through several Mayo Clinic programs:

Each year, through a highly competitive selection process, students are admitted to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Selected students pursue research in one of the eight academic specializations available:

  • Biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Biomedical engineering and physiology.
  • Clinical and translational science.
  • Immunology.
  • Molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics.
  • Neuroscience.
  • Regenerative sciences.
  • Virology and gene therapy.

Students have exceptional flexibility to choose a research mentor. Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides stipends and full-tuition scholarships for all Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students.

Graduate Research Education Program (GREP)

GREP is an hourly paid research employee program for students with undergraduate degrees who are pursuing medical school or graduate school admission. The program can last up to two years and start at any time during the year.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

SURF is a 10-week research fellowship for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years at a U.S. college or university who are interested in pursuing admission to a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program. You develop and complete or work on existing research projects and receive stipends.

Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)

PREP is an intense program of up to two years designed to expose students from underrepresented communities with undergraduate degrees to basic and translational research prior to application to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs. Students receive stipends to cover their expenses.

Postdocs

Trainees with a great sense of imagination and motivation and a track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications — any basic science, medicine or aging — are encouraged to pursue postdoctoral studies in Dr. Jurk's Biology of Aging and Age-Related Diseases Laboratory.

Contact Dr. Jurk and provide a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and two or three references.
