By studying links between exposure to anesthesia and cognitive decline in older adults, Dr. Sprung aims to improve postoperative outcomes and expand the knowledge that can help decision-making for patients and their families facing surgical anesthesia.
Overview
Led by principal investigator Juraj Sprung, M.D., Ph.D., the Anesthesia Outcomes Laboratory at Mayo Clinic studies postoperative outcomes in patients considered to be at higher risk of developing anesthesia-associated complications.
Our lab's specific areas of research interest include:
- Reducing complications after surgery through individualized approaches to anesthetic management
- Helping families make informed decisions about risks associated with surgical anesthesia and cognitive impairment in older adults
- Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project to study the association between anesthesia and various neurodevelopmental and neurological diseases and disabilities
- Using an anesthesia performance improvement database to examine other postoperative outcomes
About Dr. Sprung
Dr. Sprung is an anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and a professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Sprung studies perioperative outcomes in order to identify modifiable risk factors and improve outcomes.
