Scott.Luis@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Luis R. Scott, M.D., studies the effects of medical procedures and devices commonly used by the general population on the function of implantable cardiac devices (pacemakers and implantable defibrillators).

The most recent examples include radiation therapy and hybrid automobiles. In the latter, Dr. Scott developed a stationary model to mimic driving conditions of a moving automobile to study patients with implantable devices.

Dr. Scott is also interested in clinical outcomes after interventional treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Focus areas

  • Effects of hybrid cars on the function of implantable cardiac defibrillators. In this study, Dr. Scott has a model where he studies patients with implantable defibrillators while they are riding either as a driver or passenger in a hybrid car.

The exposure to electrical and magnetic fields in their devices is measured in different driving conditions. Dr. Scott and his team of researchers will determine the safety of this type of exposure.

  • Clinical outcomes after atrial fibrillation ablation. Dr. Scott is looking at demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as the types of ablation procedures, to assess the factors related to better outcomes in the short and long term.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Scott's research will help improve care for patients with implantable cardiac devices by better understanding their interaction with common environmental exposures to electromagnetic and electric fields.

In atrial fibrillation care, Dr. Scott's research contributes to understanding factors related to better outcomes for patients treated with interventional procedures.
