Janice Krieger, Ph.D., is a communication scientist with expertise in developing, implementing and evaluating culturally tailored interventions that use precision messaging techniques to promote health equity. Her research investigates how to apply novel technologies across the cancer continuum to address the prevention and survivorship needs of patients, families and communities.

Focus areas

• Linguistic and cultural appropriateness in health interventions. Dr. Krieger empirically examines the associations among linguistic and cultural appropriateness of health communication and health outcomes in patient, family and community contexts.
• User-centered technology solutions for precision messaging. Dr. Krieger studies how customizing health information improves cognitive processing of information and influences individual behavioral outcomes. Her recent work examines the opportunities and challenges of using virtual community health workers to address cultural, linguistic, health literacy and geographic diversity.
• Community-based participatory research. Dr. Krieger's research uses community-based participatory research principles to describe and predict how social influence principles can be applied to enhance culturally appropriate participant recruitment to research studies, dissemination of study findings and implementation of evidence-based interventions.
• Translational communication and health equity. Dr. Krieger's research uses social justice as a framework for evaluating messages in diverse communication environments. Specifically, she seeks to support distributive justice through increased availability of culturally appropriate resources in various contexts.
