SUMMARY

The primary research interests of John H. Hollman, Ph.D., include lower extremity biomechanics and gait mechanics during walking.

Regarding lower extremity biomechanics, Dr. Hollman's studies focus on the relationships between hip, knee, and foot and ankle biomechanics during weight-bearing activities. In particular, he studies how hip muscle function influences motions that may lead to lower extremity injuries, such as those to the anterior cruciate ligament and patellofemoral joint.

As for gait mechanics, his studies focus on quantifying gait instability and understanding how it influences the risk of falling.

Focus areas

  • Risk factors for knee injury. Dr. Hollman is interested in understanding how impaired hip muscle strength and impaired hip muscle motor control uniquely contribute to abnormal motions that may cause knee injuries.
  • Gait instability and fall risk. Dr. Hollman studies how gait instability may increase the risk of falls, particularly in older people.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Hollman's research will help athletes reduce their risk of knee injuries or other lower extremity injuries and, if they are injured, enhance their subsequent rehabilitation and recovery journeys.

Similarly, his research will help older people reduce their risk of falling while walking.
