The research of Grace M. Arteaga, M.D., focuses on cardiovascular physiology, from the molecular level to the patient's bedside management. Dr. Arteaga's research includes the molecular interaction of contractile proteins and their role in physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions. This research on contractile proteins addresses cellular physiology at the subcellular level, including mitochondrial function.
Other areas of interest also include the use of simulation as a tool in educational science when new educational theorems are evaluated and accepted. There is still a significant gap between the translation of efforts and methodologies to measurable clinical outcomes in patient care. Simulation education has proven to be an excellent platform for education to increase knowledge, critical thinking, team development and interprofessional collaboration.
Dr. Arteaga's research interest combines medical education with effective simulation techniques and includes patient safety and leadership skills.
Current areas of investigation include:
The understanding of cardiac contractility continues to evolve. Dr. Arteaga studies the impact of hypothermia and reperfusion in relation to cardiac contractility. Dr. Arteaga's research in patient safety and the use of simulated clinical scenarios provides a platform to understand factors associated with critical thinking.
