نظرًا إلى أن عملية الرأب الوعائي للشريان السباتي وتركيب الدعامات عملية حديثة وأقل توغلاً، لا يزال الباحثون يدرسون قدرتها طويلة المدى على علاج مرض الشريان السباتي. وقد أجرى الباحثون في مايو كلينك تجربة للمقارنة بين تركيب الدعامة وإعادة تَوَعّي الشريان السباتي باستئصال بطانته لمقارنة نتائج استئصال بطانة الشريان السباتي مع نتائج عملية الرأب الوعائي وتركيب الدعامات للشريان السباتي. وتنسِّق مايو كلينك أيضًا تجربة إعادة تَوَعّي الشريان السباتي للوقاية الأولية من السكتة الدماغية.
