Bradley.Elizabeth@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Elizabeth A. Bradley, M.D., studies the impact that problems of the eyelid, eye socket and tear drainage system have on people's quality of life. As a founding member of Mayo Clinic's Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) Clinic, she serves as a co-investigator for clinical trials of several medicines to treat thyroid eye disease. Dr. Bradley is a founding member of Mayo Clinic's facial reanimation program and is actively engaged in studies that investigate the epidemiology, clinical features, treatment and outcomes of facial nerve disorders. Dr. Bradley also studies eye-related problems in people undergoing complex reconstructive surgery, including face transplantation.

Focus areas

  • Health-related quality-of-life in people with TED. Dr. Bradley developed a questionnaire to evaluate the impact thyroid eye disease has on individuals' quality of life.
  • Epidemiology of facial nerve palsy in Olmsted County, Minnesota. The results of Dr. Bradley's research demonstrated an increasing incidence of facial nerve palsy over the last 20 years in Olmsted County.
  • Use of long-acting orbital anesthetic medicine after eye removal. Dr. Bradley is the principal investigator for a multicenter clinical trial studying the use of liposomal bupivacaine for postoperative pain control after eye removal surgery.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Bradley's research is aimed at increasing understanding of the burden that conditions such as thyroid eye disease, facial nerve palsy and severe facial trauma have on people's well-being. She also is interested in studying new medical treatments for thyroid eye disease and other eye-related conditions in a scientifically thorough way.
