Study of Potential VCA Candidates', Caregivers' and Providers' Motivations, Expectations and Shared Decision-making in VCA

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine, through in-depth interviews, the motivations, values, preferences, and expectations of VCA candidates and their caregivers.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria - Aim 1:

  • Subjects ≥ 18 years old.
  • Upper extremity amputation over six months ago or facial injury with significant mid facial deficit.
  • Able to provide informed consent.
  • Over one year post-transplant (upper extremity or face).
  • Nominated by a patient as a family caregiver.
  • Able to provide informed consent.
  • Participated as a health care professional on the VCA transplant team in a role important to patient decision making related to VCA including: VCA medical provider, VCA surgeon, VCA psychiatrist or psychologist,  VCA social worker, VCA transplant pharmacist, VCA inpatient nurse, and/or VCA nurse coordinator.

Exclusion Criteria - Aim 1:

  • Subjects with upper extremity limb loss or facial disfigurement of less than six months.
  • Subjects who are unable to participate in a 2-4 hour interview.
  • Moderate to severe cognitive impairment.
  • Lack of ability to provide informed consent.
  • Inability to follow instructions.
  • Any other issue that would make the subject unsuitable for study participation.
