Detection and Identification of Bacterial and Fungal DNA in Blood

About this study

This study includes collection of blood samples from the healthy controls and those with suspected bloodstream infections.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

Inclusion Criteria for study population:

  • Patients who are already admitted to the hospital or those who are newly admitted and meet all of the following criteria
    • New onset of fever defined as temperature ³ 38.3 degrees Celsius or ³101 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Are started on empiric antimicrobial coverage
    • Able to provide consent or have a legally authorized representative who is able to provide consent

Control population

  • Healthy individuals who present for blood donation
  • Able to provide consent

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Pregnant patients, children <18 years of age and other patients in whom consent could not be obtained who are not able to provide consent will be excluded
